Poached Pears For Two
This is one of my favorite side dishes for fall using fresh ripe pears.
When I was a kid we had a pear tree that was prolific (Producing offspring or fruit in great abundance). We also had an Irish Setter who loved to eat those pears, bees and all.
I loved those pears!
In 2013 we installed an orchard at our farm. We of course included pear trees. We did get some pears a few times, but the squirrels got most of them.
By 2024 most of the orchard is gone, between the deer, and droughts, lack of care through the pandemic, all gone.
I actually haven’t had a good pear since I was a kid. Last week at our local Amish produce stand was a stack of nice looking Bartlett pears. One dollar a piece. I bought two.

Poached Pears Recipe
Oven or grill pre set to 375

2 ripe pears
1-3 oz blue cheese - to taste really - crumbled
1/2 c port wine
2-4 tbl honey again to taste
1 cinnamon stick
5 whole cloves
Instructions
Peel the pears. Slice in half. Using a melon ball tool, scoop out the seeds and pull off the stem.
In a skillet mix together the port and honey add the cinnamon stick and cloves . Place the sliced pears sliced side down into the honey port mixture in the pan.
Over medium heat poach the pears 7 - 10 minutes, depends on how ripe the pear is, you looking for a rosey color on the pear.
Flip the pears over for another 7-10 min.
Add the bits of blue cheese to the pear cavities.
Place skillet into oven to melt the cheese a bit.
Place pears in bowls.
Remove cinnamon stick and cloves from pan.
Pour sauce over the pears.
Enjoy!
This is perfect timing - we just spent a small fortune at the Farmer's market this weekend, part of which included 2 pears. Was a little hesitant to buy them as I didn't think they grew pears in Arizona. But we rolled the dice...Might give this recipe a whirl ...
